Bolstered by Faznir’s buffs, Amnez focused her saws on the beast’s joints. Her strikes were landing, but they weren’t enough to halt its advance.
Uzeltes drew a ragged breath. Her heavy blows had taken their toll—the creature’s movements were finally slowing—but the maidens were hitting their limits. At this rate, their mana would dry up long before the beast fell.
“Hey, Blondie!”
Uzeltes barked, delivering a sweeping strike.
“Watch your mouth, you arrogant hag!”
Bernaz shot back, weaving through a spray of embers.
“We’re getting nowhere. Can you dodge that heat ray at your speed?”
“Hah? From a distance, sure.”
Bernaz glared at the beast’s glowing eyes. That ray was devastating, but it required a moment to draw in Divine Energy. It had a tell.

The image of Vizoa, the Saint Queen of Ezaris, flickered in her mind. If she ever found out about this unauthorized excursion, there would be hell to pay. Provided Bernaz lived long enough to return.
Amnez slashed into the creature’s wrist, sending a spray of ink-black blood into the air, but her mana was flickering out. Suddenly, Bernaz leaped backward.
The beast’s gaze followed her, the flames in its eyes roaring to life. It arched its back, drawing in a massive breath as concentrated magic began to ignite deep within its throat.
“Faznir! Give me everything you’ve got!”
With her twin Mauls hovering behind her like iron wings, Uzeltes surged toward the beast’s head.
“On it! Leave it to me!”
Faznir chirped, though her eyes and ears were already bleeding from the strain of overextending her powers.
The moment the heat ray was about to unleash— A maul shrieked through the air, uppercutting the beast’s jaw with a bone-shattering crunch. Its maw snapped shut, light leaking through the gaps of its teeth.
“GRAAAAAHHH!”
With a final surge of telekinetic will, Uzeltes brought the second maul crashing down onto its brow.
The twin strikes sandwiched the beast’s skull with a thunderous metallic boom. Trapped with nowhere to go, the heat ray detonated inside the creature’s own mouth.
